Fluency Race

Your child will be participating in a contest called the “Fluency Race." This contest is intended to help improve your child’s fluency skills. Being a fluent reader means reading at an appropriate rate, noticing punctuation marks, pausing at commas, stopping at periods, raising your voice at question marks, and adding expression at exclamation marks!

Here's how it works!

Each week, teachers will provide your child with a poem or short story to read to you, and to as many other adults as possible! Each time your child reads the poem or short story, an adult will sign the recording sheet. An adult can only sign once for each poem or short story. At the end of the month, you will turn in the recording sheet with as many signatures as possible. The two students in each grade who have the most signatures will win a prize. One overall prize will be given for the student who read the most in the whole school.

We want to thank you in advance for participating in the contest and helping your child improve their reading skills. If you have any questions please contact your child’s teacher or Ms. Rhoten, the reading specialist at trhoten@bcps.org.
